Glossary: B2B-B2C

Acronyms for business-to-business or business-to-consumer activities. Many websites focus on business-to-business relationships and services (like wholesale suppliers), while others focus on providing services and products to consumers.

An example of a B2B is my VA business. I provide services to other business owners and WAHM’s to help their businesses succeed.

There are TONS of B2C sites out there, but here are a few of my faves:

As you can see from the above examples, they are mom bloggers who offer a product, service or both.

Finding Focus

When I started my personal Blog back in 2006, I had vague ideas about what I might want to blog about, but no concrete plan for reigning those ideas in and presenting them in a way that might set my Blog apart or make it a place that readers would want to visit.

Consequently, my Blog never found its audience, and while it has been and continues to be a place I enjoy posting to intermittently when random inspiration strikes, it has never really had the potential for being anything but a hobby.

Some of the ideas I originally had when I started that Blog, however, did have potential. I wanted to talk about and review books and movies. I wanted to help other women find ways to work from home. And, yes, I wanted to see if maybe there might be a way to make some of those things profitable. [Read more...]

Obtaining Free Products for Review – It’s Easier Than You Think

Have you ever wondered how blog owners acquire all of the nifty products they decide to review? While many of these items were purchased by the blogger, many were given to them by the manufacturer or vendor.

This happens one of two ways. First, the blogger is contacted by the vendor, who has visited the blog and feels that their readers would enjoy learning about the product. Or, better yet, the blogger contacts the manufacturer and requests a free product!

To try this yourself, draft a short letter of introduction showcasing your blog. Make sure that you also include your mailing address and phone number.

Send it to vendors, requesting a SPECIFIC product that you feel your readers would be interested in. Many bloggers will tell you that they have better luck asking for a specific product, instead of requesting a product in general.

These vendors realize that product reviews generate a ton of interest. So, many are happy to send out a complimentary product in hopes of making additional sales.

Using Your Blog to Promote Affiliate Products

Did you know using your blog to promote products as an affiliate is a great way to not only recommend useful products to your readers but also a way to earn some cash? You won’t make a million bucks overnight but the possibility of earning residual income is key here. Who doesn’t want to earn money that they don’t really have to do ‘anything’ to make?

Some affiliate programs such as the one offered through Mom’s Talk Network Affiliates offer freebie guides you can offer to your readers and you’ll earn a commission when someone downloads the free guide. While it’s a small commission the more important thing is that you are offering something free to your readers. And we all know how everyone loves a freebie.

It can get kind of annoying if all they (your readers) ever see is the ‘sales’ letter so to speak. That’s why freebie guides are a good item to promote as well. You’ll be offering them something of value but at no charge to them!

Over at Mom’s Talk Network Affiliates there are three different guides that you can promote for free but earn a commission if someone downloads the guide. There’s Hot Mama Makeover, Find The Time Mama and the newest one Be A Great Mama. There’s even the option to earn commission by promoting the Moms TalkNews newsletter.

And of course aside from the freebie guides there is a wide array of e-books available to promote ranging in price from $5.97 up to $16.97. There are Holiday e-books, business e-books and family ones. Head on over to Mom’s Talk Network Affiliates and sign up as an affiliate if you haven’t done so already. Then don’t forget to grab your codes to promote the freebies!

Glossary: Avatar

An icon that represents you on message boards, chat rooms, IM programs, 3-D chat rooms and virtual worlds. Your avatar can be whatever you want it to be. There are graphic elements, animals, cartoons and pictures used as avatars on the Internet.

Earlier on Profitable Mommy Bloggers, Kelly introduced us to Gravatars, which is just one type of avatar. There are thousands of avatar web sites where you can make an avatar of your own and/or choose one of theirs. Twitter is a great example of the different types of avatars being used. There are personal photos, logos, icons, cartoons, etc.

If your blog has a specific brand, an image that sets it apart from others, you probably want to use that as your avatar, like IM Sweetie does here. When I see that cute little heart, I know whose website or blog that belongs too.

An avatar can be a great way to set yourself apart from the crowd, if you have one that is uniquely you. If you don’t have a brand yet, I highly suggest using your personal photo. I know some people don’t like pictures of themselves, but it really helps people identify with you, and they feel like they know you, which will hopefully bring them back to your blog over and over again.

After all, isn’t that our goal as mom bloggers; to get people to read our blogs and then come back? Using an avatar of yourself or your brand will help people recognize you and bring them back time and time again.

Glossary: Autoresponders

Autoresponders have become one of the most essential tools for Internet marketers, affiliate marketers and others who do a large amount of business on the web. Essentially, they are automatic e-mail response programs.

The autoresponder program will send pre-entered e-mail messages instantly to people who request information from a website, newsletter or online merchant. If you have e-mail and have ever joined a new website, social network, forum, or entered a contest on-line, you most likely received an e-mail from an autoresponder.

One of the most common uses for autoresponders is to create a learning course to inform and educate potential customers about the benefits of a business or product. Some on-line businesses I know that use autoresponders for this purpose are:

Autoresponders also allow Internet business people to effortlessly follow up with their clients from time to time.

So, for mom bloggers, you may want to consider using an autoresponder for your blog if you have a newsletter, a form for people to request info, if you are on online merchant, or if you have a learning course.

Our Autoresponder Recommendation: Aweber

Profitable Mommy Blogging #3

My guest this week is Megan Calhoun, founder of Twitter Moms.

When I first heard about Twitter Moms I wrinkled my nose at it.  I said ‘why do we need a social network about a social network?’  But I was wrong!  Twitter Moms has taken off like a rocket, growing to a include almost 4000 moms in just a few short weeks of it’s existence.

Add both of us as a friend and leave a comment on our profiles :)

Twitter Moms Tip: You can blog at Twitter Moms on just about any topic you like.  Focus on providing some useful information and feel free to include links to your sites.  It’s a great idea to post a ‘digest’ of your other blog posts every week or to share some link love with other mom bloggers you enjoy.

April Interviews Michael Martine of “Remarkablogger”

If you’ve been hanging around in the blogging world for a while, you probably have a few favorite blogs and there may be some professional bloggers who you admire. I can think of at least six just off the top of my head. If one of those six bloggers recommends a product or shares some advice, I am more likely to act on their suggestions because I trust them and I value their opinions.

One of these six bloggers is Michael Martine of Remarkablogger. Michael has made a career out of blogging and even provides coaching and consultations to aspiring pro bloggers. I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with Michael on Twitter and he was gracious enough to agree to answering a few questions for me about profitable blogging. I’m very excited to be able to share his responses here with you.

April: Michael, for our readers who are not familiar with ‘Remarkablogger’, can you tell me just a little about your blogging experience, such as when you started blogging, how you started making money from blogging, and what kinds of topics you cover at Remarkablogger?

Michael Martine: I started blogging in 1999 or 2000 on Blogger, and I simply loved it. I had a personal blog and nobody was really monetizing their own blogs back then. I had a web design business and an unrelated blog. Google AdSense changed everything. It really kicked off a revolution: anybody could make money simply by slapping some ads on their blogs, easy-peasy. I had a video blog (which no longer exists) that was getting great traffic as a result of being on Blogger’s “buzz” list for 3 weeks. I put ads on it and began to learn about ad optimization. At one point, that blog made about $400 a month. [Read more...]
