Profitable Mommy Blogging #22

This carries on the discussion I started on this week’s Work at Home Moms Talk Radio – so be sure to listen to that first!

In part one I talked about all of the communities that we’re part of.

Don’t forget that while you’re finding your place in all of the various web communities, that your primary goal needs to be to build your own community – people who are interested in you, your expertise and products.  I’m not talking about setting every person up with a social network of their own – I’m actually talking about your mailing list.

Yes, a mailing list is a community as well.  At least you should treat it that way.  It’s you interacting with a community of people interested in you.

So what are your choices?

My first recommendation is always Aweber, but for the frugal minded WAHM, I also mention Mad Mimi which has an option for starting free.

Stay in touch with Kelly, subscribe to her personal mailing list.

Getting Caught Up In The Hype

The past few weeks I’ve been getting repeated kicks in the rear reminding me “Where is your focus?“. I’ve lost it. Yes, I got caught up and totally 100% lost my focus and now I’ve got to get it back. So what did I get caught up in? Mommy Blogging Reviews.

I originally started my focus out to talk about healthy living, parenting, and turning our home into a green place to live on Dinker & Giggles. I then wanted to talk about my life and journey as a mom and business owner on my personal blog. I started out strong and focused with goals in mind. I was using tools from the affiliate programs I belonged to. I spoke about products and services that were dear to my heart and that I used and loved because I choose to on my own free will.

Then I started seeing all the wonderful places to join and network and even try free products in exchange for my words of recommendation. I’m not going to lie – it’s fun! It’s great receiving mail that isn’t a bill. However, when you get so caught up and start accepting things that have nothing to do with your focus then you have to realize you’ve gotten caught up! The first time I really was awoken to how caught up I had gotten was when I received a pacifier in the mail with a note thanking me for reviewing this.

Wait a minute! I’m very anti-pacifier – how did I get so caught up that I accepted a review for a pacifier?

I’m not saying that doing product reviews and being a mommy blogger is bad in no means. What I personally am trying to recognize is my original goals and how they need to grow with the new information I am learning. I want to be a profitable mommy blogger. I want to have content that is respected and not read just because there is a giveaway attached to it.

I don’t want to be caught up in the hype! If I’m reviewing a product it should be because I love it (and it meets the requirements of my focus and goals). I also need to accept that I’m worth more than a free product. My time and creative juices go into that review and I should get paid for it too.

So today’s Better Blog journey is all about stepping back and really looking at yourself, your blog, and your focus.

  • Are you happy where you are going?
  • Are you ready to say No?
  • Are you ready to get your focus on and step out of the hype?

Let’s get back to basics and get focused together!

Glossary: Forum

An Internet forum is a place on the Internet for holding discussions. Normally, forum members will either discuss one specific topic or have a common thread among all of the members.

For example, Mom Masterminds is a discussion group for Work At Home Moms where we discuss not only business related topics, but parenting, budgeting, time-management and even give each other the much needed support for owning and running a business from home.

Forums allow individuals to really connect with one another across distances using the Internet. Unlike e-mail, messages posted to the forum will be viewable by all forum members. In fact, information posted on forums is part of the public knowledge for years to come. This is one of the reasons why being a member of Mom Mastermind’s is so great: there may be a tip or idea that was posted on the forum 4 years ago, but it’s perfect for your situation right now.

Forums are supported by many different software platforms, and are very user friendly. For a lot of Internet newcomers, forums are their first entry into using the Internet. Some of the other common terms for forums are web forums, discussion forums, bulletin boards, message boards, discussion boards and discussion groups.

Glossary: Free Reprint Articles

Free Reprint Articles are articles that are free to publish on web pages. Normally, these articles are distributed by article directories and are categorized by topic.

Some of the most popular article directory sites are:

FRAs are used to add content to web pages that will help attract search engine traffic. For example, if you have a website on which you sell scrapbooking supplies, you would search for FRAs on that particular topic. Article directories list available articles in specific categories and normally have a searchable database.

Using FRAs is the quickest way to get quality content for a website. It will save you time because you won’t have to come up with the topics yourself and then type it out.

However, when using FRAs you will need to rewrite the articles so as to avoid duplicate content on the web. Other people who are in the same line of business as you may also obtain these articles, and when someone conducts a search engine query on a particular subject, you don’t want them finding duplicate content. For one thing it looks bad because your readers want to know your content comes from you, and another thing search engines don’t like duplicate content. So, make the articles your own by rewriting them to suit your personality and style.

If you don’t have time to rewrite the articles yourself, you might consider hiring a ghostwriter who will do it for you.  A quality ghostwriter will be able to determine your style and personality, therefore will write in your “voice”.

Does Sponsoring a Conference Attendee Have Value?

sponsors-wanted

sponsors-wantedWith Blogher right around the corner and Blog World Expo coming up in October,  a lot of bloggers are out there fishing for sponsorship – just like this past spring when they were looking for sponsorship to Blissdom ’09.

As a business owner who sponsored two mom bloggers to attend Blissdom ’09 – I am looking back on the money I spent on those sponsorships and checking out the return on investment – or should I say, lack thereof.

  • Mom Masterminds sponsored Carrie Lauth of Natural Mom Talk Radio.  She wore a Mom Masterminds t-shirt and handed out business cards with a coupon code good for a free month of MM Membership. (A $50 value)
  • Mom’s Talk Network sponsored Alyssa Avant of Beauty By Design Online.  She handed out cards inviting mom bloggers to check out the Mom’s Talk Affiliates program and claim a free product from our Mom’s Talk Biz website.

Note that our offers are targeted to mom bloggers who want to earn money with their blogs and that they were set up to be easy to take advantage of.  No strings attached.

Hopes: These fun, engaging mom bloggers would pass the cards out and have lots of great conversations about their sponsor.  Dozens of mom bloggers would learn about our company, tuck the card away and take action on it within a month after the event.  By taking action, I mean sign up for the freebie. 36 People Moms Should Keep An Eye On

HandshakeSome Mommy bloggers main purpose in blogging is to kiss up to the A list bloggers.  Don’t be one of those types.  The A list bloggers aren’t necessarily the powerful bloggers.

Check out these people that have great online presence.  Follow them on Twitter.  Learn from them.  They are ready, willing, and able to teach and help you.

From the blogging/marketing angle:

If you like Frugal Blogging here are some of the top movers and shakers:

If you’re into houses and decorating there’s nobody better to watch than these:

Christian Bloggers

Food/Entertaining Bloggers – I know there’s lots more of these that I don’t know about.  Leave your favorite in the comments!

Review/Giveaway Bloggers

Book Bloggers

Vloggers! My fave.  Instead of listing them all I’m just sending you to MomTV where all the coolest hang out. ;)

Bloggers that love writing

I want to mention Janice & Susan from 5 Minutes for Mom.  I have no idea what category to put them in because whatever topic it is they probably have a sister site all about it!

Here are two that every blogger should watch carefully.  These are probably the most important of this whole list.

  • The people who follow you
  • Your niche market

Did you notice I left out the big “important” ones?  Yea.  That was on purpose.
I only wish I had time to read all of these!  So, who did I miss?  Want to add your blog in the comments?

What Discourages You When Shopping Online?

logoThis is the last question in the cross blog conversation with Chele from Moms Love Shopping because my internship is coming to an end.  Chele responded to my previous question about marketing with a great [although non-sexy] answer.  I know a lot of people that need to read her answer about marketing.  Thank you, Chele, for your part of the conversation!

Here is her question for me:

When shopping online, what aspects about a blog/website discourage you from making a purchase that you were considering? What do you wish more bloggers/online retailers would take into account for their shopping visitors?

Do You Want To Learn What I Learned?

1166381_blog

1166381_blogTo take part in Kelly’s internship I had to apply, be accepted, and commit to 10 weeks of writing for her network.  It’s been great and I’m still learning a lot.  You can have the benefit of the internship without applying because Kelly has launched an on demand blog internship

There are 3 levels of membership to choose from.  You can try one for a month and if you need more you can go to the next level or, if you don’t like it [which I highly doubt] you can cancel at any time.  I highly recommend that you get some feed back.

For me personally, I needed the commitment.  As a busy mother/wife it’s easy to just push things aside because of the demands of daily life.  I needed to know that I had a deadline and someone watching over my virtual shoulder.  If you are that type you might want to consider the one time payment.  If your money is invested in the internship I think you will be more conscious of the time you put into it.  If you use the internship to develop good blogging habits it will be totally worth the price!

You’ll learn about WordPress, affiliate marketing, networking, better writing, linking, memes, and so much more.  You can wait till fall when Kelly will be taking six more interns for free.  Take a chance by following Kelly on Twitter and write for her blogs OR have a sure thing by signing up for the blog internship for your blog now.

Six Things To Check Before Clicking Publish

checkmark

Some simple things to get in the habit of checking before publishing your post:

checkmarkPicture – Every blog post should have some kind of picture.  Sometimes it’s hard to find a related picture.  Think about it for a minute and see if you can come up with something clever.

Headline – Will it catch the reader’s eye and make them interested?  Does it have key words that will show up in searches?  Does the post deliver what the title promises?

Voice – Read the post out loud.  Does it sound like you?  Does it flow?

Grammar – Edit! Edit! Edit! Check for misspellings and proper punctuation.  Cut out extra words wherever you can.

Layout – Is it scannable?  Have you made some key words bold?  Can you turn some of it into a list?  Is there white space?  Use the preview tab and make sure it looks good.

Links – Can you link to any of your other posts?  Does someone else have a similar post that might be of interest to your readers?

Your readers will appreciate your checking these six things!

How To Be An Affiliate Marketer

affiliate-expo

Last week I made 50 cents from Moms Talk Network.  You may say [in a Brooklyn accent], “Big deal.  Go buy yourself a soda.”  I’m happy about it anyway and looking at it as the first rung in a long ladder that I hope to climb.

How did I make this money?  Through an affiliate link.

How did I learn to be an affiliate marketer? From podcasts and recordings.  I had dabbled with links to Amazon and ads in my sidebar.  They weren’t doing much at all so I knew that I was missing something.

How can you learn this? First, listen to these free Mom’s Talk Affiliates Podcasts.  If you don’t have a clue about affiliate marketing listen to them first.  They start from square one and give you a nice foundation.

After that, or if you already know a little bit about affiliate marketing, purchase these affiliate expo recordings.  They are worth every penny of the $7.00.  I learned so much from them!  It was the first time that I sat with a notebook and pen in hand to listen to a podcast/recording.  Usually I’m folding laundry, doing dishes, stirring food, or something, but I kept having to stop and write notes so I sat and listened.

Do you want to climb the affiliate marketing ladder too?  I’ve given you two excellent resources to learn from.

I know some of you reading this have already listed to the expo recordings.  What did you think of them?

On Being a Good Wife And A Profitable Blogger

wifeywednesday-1You may think it strange that I picked the meme about marriage for this blog.  Bear with me, I hope it will make sense.

Before I started this internship, before I even filled out the application, I talked it over with my husband.  I knew there would be more time demands on me and more things that would not get done.  I needed him to be okay with that because, to me, bringing in tons of money would mean nothing if my husband/marriage was not happy.  Not that I’m bringing in tons of money, but you get the idea.

I want to encourage you to put your marriage above your business.  Sometimes, it’s tempting for me to just keep online things to myself because it’s harder to explain to him anyways.  It’s a part of my life that’s important to me right now and it needs to be shared with my husband.

Don’t let your online friends push away the friend that you married.

You are more than welcome to join in Wifey Wednesdays.  The link up is at To Love Honor and Vacuum.
