What Discourages You When Shopping Online?

This is the last question in the cross blog conversation with Chele from Moms Love Shopping because my internship is coming to an end. Chele responded to my previous question about marketing with a great [although non-sexy] answer. I know a lot of people that need to read her answer about marketing. Thank you, Chele, for your part of the conversation!

Here is her question for me:

When shopping online, what aspects about a blog/website discourage you from making a purchase that you were considering? What do you wish more bloggers/online retailers would take into account for their shopping visitors?

There’s so many places to shop online that if it’s not easy I just don’t shop there. It’s not like we have to get in the car and drive somewhere. We just click, click to another store.

I don’t know if high prices count, but they certainly discourage me. Aside from that – outrageous shipping & handling. Ok, ok I’ll get serious now.

A search bar is a high requirement for me. Search = shop. I’m not a browser type; I’m a get in, find it, and get out.
Flashing ads are no good. Hello! I’m already shopping your site. I don’t like those TVs hanging down in Wal-mart either.
Jumping through 30 hoops to check out drives me nuts. I like when it tells me, “Page 2 of 3″ or something that I know how much I have left to fill out.
Not having an easy way to view the cart and returns to shopping makes me leave.
Having to hunt for the shipping & handling makes me suspect that they jacked it up.
I wish more would have PayPal. I love PayPal.
Just email me the invoice. Don’t tell me to print it or lose it because I’ll lose it. Let me keep it safe in my email folder.

Is that enough ranting? I’m not normally like this, but Chele asked.

Do You Want To Learn What I Learned?

To take part in Kelly’s internship I had to apply, be accepted, and commit to 10 weeks of writing for her network. It’s been great and I’m still learning a lot. You can have the benefit of the internship without applying because Kelly has launched an on demand blog internship.

There are 3 levels of membership to choose from. You can try one for a month and if you need more you can go to the next level or, if you don’t like it [which I highly doubt] you can cancel at any time. I highly recommend that you get some feed back.

For me personally, I needed the commitment. As a busy mother/wife it’s easy to just push things aside because of the demands of daily life. I needed to know that I had a deadline and someone watching over my virtual shoulder. If you are that type you might want to consider the one time payment. If your money is invested in the internship I think you will be more conscious of the time you put into it. If you use the internship to develop good blogging habits it will be totally worth the price!

You’ll learn about Wordpress, affiliate marketing, networking, better writing, linking, memes, and so much more. You can wait till fall when Kelly will be taking six more interns for free. Six Things To Check Before Clicking Publish

Some simple things to get in the habit of checking before publishing your post:

Picture – Every blog post should have some kind of picture. Sometimes it’s hard to find a related picture. Think about it for a minute and see if you can come up with something clever.

Headline – Will it catch the reader’s eye and make them interested? Does it have key words that will show up in searches? Does the post deliver what the title promises?

Voice – Read the post out loud. Does it sound like you? Does it flow?

Grammar – Edit! Edit! Edit! Check for misspellings and proper punctuation. Cut out extra words wherever you can.

Layout – Is it scannable? Have you made some key words bold? Can you turn some of it into a list? Is there white space? Use the preview tab and make sure it looks good.

Links – Can you link to any of your other posts? Does someone else have a similar post that might be of interest to your readers?

Your readers will appreciate your checking these six things!

How To Be An Affiliate Marketer

Last week I made 50 cents from Moms Talk Network. You may say [in a Brooklyn accent], “Big deal. Go buy yourself a soda.” I’m happy about it anyway and looking at it as the first rung in a long ladder that I hope to climb.

How did I make this money? Through an affiliate link.

How did I learn to be an affiliate marketer? From podcasts and recordings. I had dabbled with links to Amazon and ads in my sidebar. They weren’t doing much at all so I knew that I was missing something.

How can you learn this? First, listen to these free Mom’s Talk Affiliates Podcasts. If you don’t have a clue about affiliate marketing listen to them first. They start from square one and give you a nice foundation.

After that, or if you already know a little bit about affiliate marketing, purchase these affiliate expo recordings. They are worth every penny of the $7.00. I learned so much from them! It was the first time that I sat with a notebook and pen in hand to listen to a podcast/recording. Usually I’m folding laundry, doing dishes, stirring food, or something, but I kept having to stop and write notes so I sat and listened.

Do you want to climb the affiliate marketing ladder too? I’ve given you two excellent resources to learn from.

On Being a Good Wife And A Profitable Blogger

You may think it strange that I picked the meme about marriage for this blog. Bear with me, I hope it will make sense.

Before I started this internship, before I even filled out the application, I talked it over with my husband. I knew there would be more time demands on me and more things that would not get done. I needed him to be okay with that because, to me, bringing in tons of money would mean nothing if my husband/marriage was not happy. Not that I’m bringing in tons of money, but you get the idea.

I want to encourage you to put your marriage above your business. Sometimes, it’s tempting for me to just keep online things to myself because it’s harder to explain to him anyways. It’s a part of my life that’s important to me right now and it needs to be shared with my husband.

Don’t let your online friends push away the friend that you married.

Why I Wanted To Be An Intern

After a busy week Chele was able to answer my first cross blog questions on her Moms Love Shopping Blog. She admitted that she spends 8-10 hours online every day and needs to work on controlling her internet window shopping. Don’t we all! It’s so easy to click, click, click – or tweet, tweet, tweet. All of a sudden half a day is gone!

Here’s what she asked me:

What was your interest in becoming a blogging intern at Profitable Mommy Blogging? I noticed that you were already blogging on your own blog for two years before accepting the position.
What are the distractions that keep you from spending as much time as you’d like blogging and how do you avoid them?

The short story of why I wanted to be an intern is that I’d never made more than $10 a month on my blog during the first two years. I started “stalking” Kelly and her network because of sitting beside Carrie Lauth at Blissdom. After finding out that they both support their family with what they make I wanted to know how they did it. My goal right now is not to support my whole family, but we could really use some help. Access to Kelly and Mom Masterminds was a big incentive also!

My main time distractions are ages 6, 4, and 2. LOL The best way to avoid them is to get up early while they’re sleeping. I also use the computer during nap time. Another distraction is reading. I love to just sit and read, and read, and read. Some of that I can justify because I do reviews on my blog, but occasionally I feel guilty for the time I spend in a book. I avoid that by making sure I post to my blog before I pick up a book. A smaller distraction is other blogs. It’s so fun to just sit and go through blog after blog, but I fall in the rut of reading without commenting and that’s no good.

Now it’s Chele’s turn again.

Is Your Website Sticky?

Normally when someone says sticky I grab the washcloth and head for the kids. A sticky website, however, is a good thing. If your website is sticky it means that visitors will stay longer. They will visit more pages, and they will book mark it to come back again.

Some simple things you can do to make your site sticky are:

Make sure your page loads quickly
Have your subscribe information prominent
Include related posts at the bottom of each post
Make the links open in a new page
Include links right in your content to other content
Have a list of categories in a prominent position
Make sure your website is easy to navigate
Use the More tag so more posts are visible on the main page
Include a next post/previous post link
Keep your website attractive without cluttered sidebars

The possibilities are unlimited!

Keeping visitors on your site will help your bounce rate. A “bounce” is when a reader comes, looks, and leaves. Having a giveaway that gets you lots of comments without loyal readers will affect your bounce rate because those visitors just bounced through on their merry way to more giveaways and probably won’t be back. You want your bounce rate to be a low percentage. You want readers to visit more than one page, to drink their coffee and stay a while. A good bounce rate statistic of 65% or under should be included in your media kit.

How To Make A Media Kit That’ll Knock ‘Em Dead

A business card might get you an introduction. A media kit might get you a job. Here are some things you should have in your media kit.

Tell them about the genius behind your site

Include a short bio;
What you write about – in a nutshell;
A professional looking picture; and
Contact info – are you available for phone or Skype calls?

Tell them who knows about you

Include your blog stats per month;
Demographics/Info about your readers that could include gender, age range, # of children, education, employment, income, location, ethnicity;
How influential your audience is [do they blog, twitter, use facebook?];
Your numbers [Twitter followers, Google Rank, Alexa Rank, Technorati authority, newsletter info, blog key words];
Affiliations, Forums, Groups you’re a part of; and
Don’t forget to include offline influence – we do talk in real life also.

Tell them what you will and won’t do

List your advertising prices & sizes
What type of payment you will accept – I personally would only accept PayPal or Post Office money orders and make sure I have the money before I do anything. Contracts are a good thing!
Review and Giveaway Policies – Will you return products? Will you mail giveaways yourself?

Tell them what you’ve done in the past

Have you had the good fortune of being mentioned in a press release?

That’s a big list of things to gather together. You can do it. Mix, match, and make it your own. Scribbit has a simple yet effective media kit while Maria Bailey has a pretty fancy one. Once you get the basics together just quickly update it every month.

Some people like to post everything online for the world to see. Some post everything except the prices. Some email it as requested.

It’s time to Buzz a Mom! This week we are talking to Dr. Daisy Sutherland, aka Dr. Mommy.

My name is Dr. Daisy Sutherland, aka Dr. Mommy, and I am a Doctor of Chiropractic by profession, a mom to 5 beautiful children which I home school, and married to my soul mate…Health/Wellness and Nutrition have always been a big part of my life and sharing my knowledge with the public is very important to me.

I am a Parenting Coach and my mission is to help parents teach their families to lead happier and healthier lives. My ultimate goal is to help individuals take control of their bodies and health and make informed decisions regarding their health.

I was flat out amazed at how many sites she runs! She has tips to stay healthy, helping you help your family, a cont ent writing and managing site, a Reserved Only course teaching respect, responsibility, and renewal, an estore, and she stays active on Twitter.

So I had to ask her, “Do you have a VA?”
I do and couldn’t imagine not having one.

Which of your sites is your favorite?
I love all my sites, but if I had to pick just one, I would have to say Dr. Mommy Chronicles.

Do you have set times for working and set times for being a mommy? How do you divide your day between computer and kids?
I do have set times…Since I manage our Chiropractic office, I have access to a computer during those work hours and being a multi-tasker…I can answer phones, chat with patients, give advice and work online all at once

I also have specific times to work on my sites and mommy time. My weekends are solely devoted to my family and personal projects. My children will always come first, and unless I am on a call with a client, I will drop all to care for them.

I tend to stay up late to work on my projects online, when the children are asleep as well.

I can see how your interest in wellness and nutrition evolved into your sites, but how did you get into content writing and managing?
I have always loved to write and it wasn’t until I transferred that love of writing into my sites that I was able to help others with their blogs. I am very neurotic (yes, self-professed) about organization. Because of this I have been able to juggle my sites and those of my clients without an issue.

Do you have a tip for Moms that want to make their blog profitable?
One tip, that I can give all Moms is to be patient. Yes, that is easier said than done, but in order to be profitable you have to understand that it is not going to happen over-night. Another great tip that has helped me in my business is to learn from those who are successful. There are many successful Moms online today and they are open and willing to share ideas with you. Finding mentors online is very helpful and will save you a lot of time and money. You can learn from their mistakes without making them yourself.

If You Promise Something You Must Deliver

I was thinking about the song “Show Me” from My Fair Lady. Just in case you aren’t familiar with the song here’s the clip.

With that in mind here are some blogging analogies I thought of.

Have you ever read a blog where they constantly write how sorry they are that they haven’t written in a while? I will soon remove that blog from my feed reader. I’d rather they just pop in now and then with a short post instead of often telling me they are sorry. If you’re truly sorry you don’t keep repeating the action.

Show me.

Another type that gets removed is the one that always writes they are too busy to write. That just doesn’t make much sense. Why have a blog at all then? There’s nothing wrong with posting once a week. Just schedule your post to publish on the same day every week. Tell your readers which day the new post will be up and they will come.

Show me.

Then there’s the type that have “burn-out” every other week. That gets tiresome too. Take a break and come back. Or just deal with it because, after all, blogging is about writing. I don’t think newspaper journalists can say, “Sorry Editor, I’m just burned out this week and can’t write.”

Show me.

What about the type that talks about how great they are? Actions speak louder than words.

Show me now.

Interview With Angela Moore: Twittermoms Community Manager

Recently I received an email announcing that Angela Moore just became Twittermoms Community Manager. So when Kelly asked me to do an interview with Angela I was very excited. She replied quite promptly and graciously. I’ll be quiet and let you read for yourself.

You seem very busy with 2 kids, 2 blogs, and an online business. What persuaded you to add Community Manager for Twittermoms to that list?

I first heard about TwitterMoms when Megan posted in a few Twitter-related groups on some other Mom Blogger networks. I’m pretty sure MomBloggersClub.com was the first one I saw it on. I immediately joined and was one of the first members. I welcomed new members and helped spread the word because I thought it was a great idea. From there, I just stayed active as much as I could and helped Megan when she needed it. When Megan called me and asked if I’d like the position I jumped at the chance. The network is so amazing because of the women that are in it. For me, it was a no-brainer. I’ve watched the network grow and change and evolve in such a short time that it’s impossible to imagine where it will be in a year from now and I’ve always wanted to be a part of that.

Can you give us a brief description of what that position entails?

Basically, I’ve been charged with monitoring what’s going on in the network and helping to promote really interesting blog posts by our members, participate in discussions, answer questions, solve issues and just be a point of contact for the network in general. I also help Megan maintain the integrity of the network. People who post inappropriate items, who are cruel or intolerant of people with differing opinions or people who are trying to use the network for their own personal gain without giving anything in return; those are all things that I watch out for. That can involve having discussions with those individuals or removing them from the network if that’s necessary.

Can you tell us what a professional link development specialist does?

My career is in Search Engine Optimization and specifically link development (also referred to as “link building”). I am a consultant and work with clients to help them get more links pointing to their Web sites from other sites. When you’re in SEO, you want your client(s) to rank for specific keywords. So, for instance, if I’m working with a bookseller, they may want to rank for the phrase “non-fiction books” or “best selling books.” My job is to help them rank for that keyword by getting other Web sites to link to their site with “non-fiction books” or “best selling books” as part of the link. It’s a lot easier to explain in person rather than typing it out!

Did you have training or are you self taught?

I received initial training from some incredibly intelligent people in the industry who taught me a lot of the basics and then allowed me to really stretch myself into a link development expert. I started as an overall SEO specialist, but gravitated to link building shortly after I immersed myself in the industry. From there, I basically ran with the idea of link development. Now I work with a company called Intrapromote full-time as the link development director and I love what I do. I continue to learn both through webinars and structured training sessions as well as on my own. I also like to take ideas and “test” them to see if my hypotheses are correct. It’s a lot of on-the-job training so to speak, but that’s how I learn best.

I love your attitude for Unexpected Art: A Positive Blog! It helped me sit straighter with a better outlook just by scanning the page. What do you do on the days when it’s hard to be happy? How do you change your attitude?

That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? That blog was started basically as a pet project and it involved into what it is now. Being positive is something I struggle with on a daily basis. I am naturally a negative person. And the toughest thing about it all is that everyone is different. For some people, getting outside and exercising is what helps balance them back to that happy place. For others, it’s sitting quietly. Me? I like to read, craft, take a walk, meditate; basically anything that distracts me from my current point of stress. After my brain has been quieted down a bit, I can then focus on the problem better. Sometimes I journal, sometimes I talk with a close confidant, sometimes I write down a plan of action. But like I said, everyone is different.

You change your attitude by paying close attention to how you’re thinking, acting, speaking and in general how you are on a day-to-day basis. You find the things that are your “triggers” for negativity. For me? If I’m tired, hungry, angry or lonely I tend to get worked up about nothing. But when I can identify those things, then I’m less likely to act out because I’m aware of them. For some people this is an extremely simple process. For others (like me) it takes years to make what seems like minimal progress.

Do you have a tip for moms that want to make money from their blogs?

To be honest, I don’t make money from my blogs (not that I haven’t thought about it! It’s just not time for me to do that yet), but I can tell you two things that will help no matter what you’re doing:
1. Do what you love. It’ll make going to work (even if it’s just your dining room table or kitchen counter) so much more enjoyable. Plus you’ll never get tired of writing about it, researching it, talking about it, etc.
2. Don’t isolate yourself. Find other bloggers/people that are passionate about the same things as you and connect with them. Not everyone is your competition. By sharing knowledge and ideas, you can become stronger in your area of expertise and you can network with people who share interests with you.
