Blogging As A Career

money under the mouseI am at the FitBloggin Conference. It is a great conference with great people and presenters. The purpose of this post is NOT to bash anyone. I just feel like if I don’t write this out I will implode.

I – and nearly everyone else at the conference  - attended a session yesterday titled “Blogging From Hobby to Career?” I think that it had a totally wrong title. The four ladies that spoke come from a position of working for big brands or big companies and that is what they spoke about. There is nothing wrong with that, and all the information they shared was good. BUT – you knew that was coming didn’t you – BUT – there was no mention of other ways to make income from a blog!

Mommy Confessions

shocked mother

shocked motherThroughout the mommy blogosphere you’ll find a lot of mommy confessions in the form of blog posts. Moms are talking about their personal feelings, opinions, and even giving out information about themselves and their families and even telling what they think about others. Are these mommy confessions a good thing, or a bad thing? Are moms revealing too much, or too little? The answer to these questions are the same: It Depends.

Can you handle the heat?

If you’re going to be open about your opinions regarding the issues of the day, be prepared for not only people agreeing with you, but people disagreeing with you. Sometimes the people who disagree can do so very loudly and publically. It might even make the front of CNN.com or the front page of your local newspaper. If you cannot handle this type of fame, don’t make public confessions.

Mailing List For Your Site – What It Is

Wahmcart, ecommerce solutions for moms

Have you heard the saying, “The money is in the list?” They are referring to a mailing list. If you are an online marketer it is important to have an email list. AND if you are a serious blogger you are an online marketer. Even if you are just trying to get more traffic and views you are marketing yourself, your writing, and your site.

What exactly is an email list?

An email list is different than your RSS feed email. Bloggers often give readers the option to “subscribe through email.” When the reader enters their email address they get each new post delivered straight to their inbox. A mailing list is different; it is often used for newsletters and special updates. The content of the mailing list should not repeat any of the content on the blog. You can point out that you have some great new posts up, but don’t just copy your posts into the newsletter. The people that join your mailing list are giving you permission to contact them personally through email. It is a valuable connection that should be nurtured and protected. It’s not hard to hit “unsubscribe” so make sure you give them good content.

Profitable Mommy Blogging 34 | Topic Ideas

It’s a shorter podcast this week because it’s just me talking. I’m getting longer winded though; I’m up to 15 minutes. I talked about ways to come up with content ideas – they can be used with written, audio, or video content. Here’s the pitch formulas that I talk about towards the end of the podcast:

  1. “_____ things you don’t know about __________that could ____________.”
  2. “How to ________ without ____________”
  3. “_______ easy ways to fight ____________”
  4. “______ways to ________ and not_______.” ” ______steps to________and still _________.” “Protest your_______.”  ”Don’t let _________ scam you.”
  5. “What ______ never taught you about ________”
  6. “Is/Are ________ getting more ________ than you are? ____ things you can do to turn the tide now”
  7. “What to do when _____ says _______”
The formulas are from Radio Publicity expert Alex Carroll, courtesy of Steve Harrison, the publisher of the Radio and Television Interview Report.

Start A Blog In One Hour

hourglass

If you don’t have a blog yet, you’re missing out on one of the easiest methods of marketing your goods and services. The great thing is, getting started is so easy that you can get started in an hour or less. It really is simple to get started, but you’ll have to make some choices first. Such as what host you’ll use, do you want to use a free service or a paid service. Do you want to build it yourself or do you want to hire someone?

Free Services -hourglass

  • WordPress.com,
  • Weebly.com,
  • Blogger,
  • LiveJournal,
  • xanga.com,
  • and more.

The main feature of free services is that while you can start a blog you must pay very close attention to the terms of service (TOS). You usually don’t need any technical knowhow to operate one of these free hosted blogs. But, they will usually put advertisements on your blog. Many free services do not allow you to run your blog for a profit, or a business. Also, since they are hosting you, they can delete your blog and information at any point. Some even claim the rights to use your pictures or other information as they see fit. So read the TOS very carefully if you choose to go for a free blogging service.

Make Money Blogging By Using Your Journalism Skills

journalist on street

journalist on streetIf you have experience in mainstream journalism you are a hop, skip, and jump ahead in the blogging game. Some mothers that became inactive when their children were small made good use of blogs and social media to keep their name out there and their skills honed. I’ve seen several success stories of mothers re-entering the mainstream journalism work force with minimal effort due to their online work and reputation.

There’s also a lot of mothers that don’t want to go back to work full time. There’s lots of jobs you can do from home. Make sure you list your experience on the about page of your site.  Seriously think about having a very focused blog on a topic that you love.  If you could have any journalistic job in the world, what would it be? What would you talk about? Create that type of site.

If you were in TV try online video. You like audio the best? Start a radio show or podcast. Writing is your strong point? There are lots of freelance opportunities available online – including this one at Investigative Mommy Blogger. There are sites and forums dedicated to freelance writing jobs. Get started and immediately work on monetizing your work. You don’t have to build a resume/experience if you’ve already been in the field. You really are a hop, skip, and jump ahead. So go for it!

Profitable Mommy Blogging 31 | Lies Bloggers Tell Part 1

mommy reporter

mommy reporterMy guest this week is Desiree Peeples aka Mommy Reporter. Together we talk about her post on Lies Bloggers Tell. In part 1 we cover the following:

  • Lie #1: “I’ve been blogging since before it was popular.”
  • Lie #2: “I had over 10,000 followers on Twitter, but I had to close my account so I could focus more on my kids.”
  • Lie #3: “I only spend about an hour or two on my blog every week.”
  • Lie #4: “I was approached by XYZ company to review that product, but I decided it wasn’t a good fit for my readers.”
  • Lie #5: “Yes, I’m going to ABC conference. I’ve already got a sponsor lined up.”

Then we got sidetracked talking about conference sponsorship and her new product that she is working on. Her product will teach others the best way to get a sponsor.

Because we talked for an hour you’ll have to wait till next week for part 2.
