Blog Reader Profiles: How Do You Know When You’re Just Starting?

3D Character and Question Mark

One essential element to a successful blog is to know your audience.  Knowing what your readers want and even why they want it equips you to profit as a provider (or referrer) of the products they desire.

Also known as a persona,  a blog reader profile is simply a composite of your ideal reader.

  • How old is she?
  • Is she married?
  • Does she have children?
  • What’s her annual income?

By identifying these unique characteristics,  you can customize your content just for her.

Finds and Favorites: Fresh Journal Theme

Fresh Journal

Prior to starting my Smart Blogging Skills program, I decided to try developing several niche blogs.  A major problem that I encountered was finding a reasonably priced, premium theme that I could use on multiple domains.  Many of the well-known premium themes require you to purchase a developer’s license and at a price that I wasn’t ready to pay.

Then there was Fresh Journal by Simply Fresh Themes.  Fresh Journal offers a buffet of delicious customization choices at a price that’s easy to swallow!  Just about all of the theme elements can be customized:

Google Instant: How Will It Affect Your Blog’s SEO?

Google Instant
Google Instant is Google’s latest release designed to improve the way you search. Now results pages are displayed instantly as you type.  Also Google will fill in (with light gray text) a complete search phrase it thinks you want. The idea is to save time by eliminating keystrokes and the guesswork that slows searchers down.

Google Instant Not For SEO

If you follow the SEO circles, then you’ve probably have heard an earful of what Google Instant means for search engine optimization.  Just from what I’ve read, it hasn’t been welcomed with open arms in the SEO community.  Some are going as far to say that it’s the death of SEO.

Do I think it’s the end to SEO? No, but just like the Google MayDay update, I think it will cause some noticeable changes for SEO-especially for niche bloggers.

Accountability Made the Difference

As I reflected over this past week’s blog posts, one thought kept coming to mind – accountability made the difference. The past nine weeks in the Smart Blogging Skills training have expanded my mindset and belief in my potential to develop an online business.  I look back over the number of posts I’ve written and I’m amazed.  I’ve never been this consistent with any of my web projects in the past two years.

Yes, I’ve been trying (at least that’s what I told myself) for that long to make it online.    I asked myself what was so special about the program that enabled me to succeed where I failed on my own.  Accountability – plain and simple.

Before I would start projects and never finish.  The web is littered with my feeble attempts-blogs, domains, squidoo lenses and articles.   But no one knew, so it was okay.  I rationalized to myself that “at least” I was doing something.  And if I just kept doing something, it would all come together.  Not!

After two years of tinkering, I just got sick and tired of not having anything meaningful to show for my time.  I grew tired of chasing the next big shiny object promising the internet lifestyle with the push of a button.  You often hear lifestyle gurus pushing how making a public declaration of goals energizes you more to accomplish the goal.  It’s true.

When you run the risk of failing, being wrong and quitting while the world is watching, you’re more likely to push through one more time. Before you know it, you’ve pushed through enough to have reached your goal!

Blogging on the Go: Smartphone Style!

Remember my post about creating a blogging gift list?  Well guess who got a Droid smartphone?  Yep, yours truly.  I practiced what I preached and it paid off big time.  My husband asked what I wanted for my birthday, and I just mentioned I wanted something for my business.  Without hesitation he said he knew what to get me.  A few days later I was pleasantly surprised with my phone.  He did really good this time!

Needless to say, I’ve been like a child with a new toy!  My Droid is all that and a bag of chips.  All the app choices are addictive.  To celebrate the occasion, I found this great video by Alice Seba where she shows how to get real savvy with your phone and blog on the go!

Do you blog on the go?  Let me know in the comments.

Top 10 Ways to Increase Affiliate Commissions Fast!

Top 10 Affiliate Tips

Affiliate marketing is still one of the best ways to make money blogging. The problem is the market is flooded with thousands of affiliate marketers promoting the same products, the same way.  Use these ten strategies to increase your chance of searchers buying through your affiliate links.

1. Pick 3 Core Products at Multiple Price Points

Core products are ones that you will repeatedly recommend.  Think about 3 products that you use on a a regular basis e.g. email service, keyword research tool, and a membership site. Try to cover three price points to appeal to a wider audience.  Select a low priced option to increase the chance of people purchasing through you just because it’s inexpensive/low risk.  Also locate a product that offers recurring commission. This will provide you steady money to keep you going between the spikes and drops in overall affiliate earnings.  Lastly, pick a high-priced offer for your market.  Not only will it generate more cash, it also helps you identify the more serious buyers to market to .

Philadelphia Charges $300 to Blog?

Fee to blog

Do earnings of $50 qualify your blog as a business?  Well Philadelphia thinks so-to the tune of $300.

Social media sites are buzzing about an article published in the Philadelphia City Paper featuring a story of Marilyn Bess who blogs at Ms Philly Organic.  The irony of the situation is that all this press will bring plenty of traffic which could generate more revenue for the blog. Interesting predicament to be in…

On one hand, I agree with the charge.  A business is a business whether it’s online or offline.  If you expect benefits of a business, mainly being paid money, then you have to take the responsibilities of owning a business-paying taxes.  The part that’s a little touchy for me is that such small amounts($50 and even $11!) in earnings classifies you as a business.  As Andrea Mannio of the Philadelphia Department of Revenue puts it, just making the choice to possibly earn revenue from ads (aka Adsense), regardless of the amount earned, means you have identified your blog as a business.

Link Love: Niche Blogging Helpers

Niche blogging

This week I touched on the topic of niche blogging.  I didn’t get a chance to really dig into the subject as much as I would have liked.  So I pulled together some blog posts that I think will guide you in starting on the right foot with niche blogging, or getting back on track if you’re not getting the expected results.

Let the Market Change You – Glenn Livingston shares his personal story of how it took more than research data and SEO tactics to make an impact in his niche market-guinea pigs.

Online Marketing Starts With Results Not Reasons – Some of you developed a niche blog around a passion.  Your reasons probably fall into the areas of wanting to help people and share all you know about your niche. Cathy Goodwin breaks it down on why reasons aren’t enough.  She shows you how to turn your reasons into tangible results for your readers.

5 Habits of Unusually Lazy Web Content Writers and Marketers – To rise in the ranks of niche blogging, you’re gonna need a lot of content!  When you’re producing content day, after day, after day… it’s easy to get in a rut and not know it.  Run through this checklist for signs of lazy blogging to see if any sound familiar.

How I Gained 3,323 Subscribers in 3 Months – If you failed the lazy blogger test, this is a great post by Celestine Chua to re-energize your blogging. She provides a 6-point strategy to increase your subscription.  Once you have more subscribers, you can survey them and let them tell you what to write about.  This will take some of the pressure off from constantly trying to come up ideas.

One of My Favorite Books: Free Until September 2nd

WTS

One of my all-time favorite books, “Work the System” by Sam Carpenter,  is available as a free download for
the next 7 days.
If someone were to ask me what are the top 10 books that have influenced me the most, this book would definitely be on the list.

Sam brilliantly reveals a new paradigm of managing business and every area of life- and I do mean EVERY area- by approaching them through the age-old tool of systems. I know, I know…it sounds boring, technical and you’ve heard it before.  But how many times have you also heard that the answers to moving out of our  problems are usually right in front of us…it just takes an adjustment in perspective.

You’ll discover how he went from a severely ill and depressed, nearly bankrupt, single parent of two children living in his office building to become the thriving husband, father, business owner, and author he is today-all by working the systems in his life.
