I am at the FitBloggin Conference. It is a great conference with great people and presenters. The purpose of this post is NOT to bash anyone. I just feel like if I don’t write this out I will implode.
I – and nearly everyone else at the conference - attended a session yesterday titled “Blogging From Hobby to Career?” I think that it had a totally wrong title. The four ladies that spoke come from a position of working for big brands or big companies and that is what they spoke about. There is nothing wrong with that, and all the information they shared was good. BUT – you knew that was coming didn’t you – BUT – there was no mention of other ways to make income from a blog!

Throughout the mommy blogosphere you’ll find a lot of mommy confessions in the form of blog posts. Moms are talking about their personal feelings, opinions, and even giving out information about themselves and their families and even telling what they think about others. Are these mommy confessions a good thing, or a bad thing? Are moms revealing too much, or too little? The answer to these questions are the same: It Depends.
Can you handle the heat?
If you’re going to be open about your opinions regarding the issues of the day, be prepared for not only people agreeing with you, but people disagreeing with you. Sometimes the people who disagree can do so very loudly and publically. It might even make the front of CNN.com or the front page of your local newspaper. If you cannot handle this type of fame, don’t make public confessions.

One of the hardest parts of blogging is coming up with blogging content. How do you continuously produce content day after day, and year after year? Why are there some people who seem to be endless fountains of topics, and others who struggle with each and every post. If you’re a struggler, read on, you will learn how to never run out of topic ideas.

Have you heard the saying, “The money is in the list?” They are referring to a mailing list. If you are an online marketer it is important to have an email list. AND if you are a serious blogger you are an online marketer. Even if you are just trying to get more traffic and views you are marketing yourself, your writing, and your site.
What exactly is an email list?
An email list is different than your RSS feed email. Bloggers often give readers the option to “subscribe through email.” When the reader enters their email address they get each new post delivered straight to their inbox. A mailing list is different; it is often used for newsletters and special updates. The content of the mailing list should not repeat any of the content on the blog. You can point out that you have some great new posts up, but don’t just copy your posts into the newsletter. The people that join your mailing list are giving you permission to contact them personally through email. It is a valuable connection that should be nurtured and protected. It’s not hard to hit “unsubscribe” so make sure you give them good content.

If you don’t have a blog yet, you’re missing out on one of the easiest methods of marketing your goods and services. The great thing is, getting started is so easy that you can get started in an hour or less. It really is simple to get started, but you’ll have to make some choices first. Such as what host you’ll use, do you want to use a free service or a paid service. Do you want to build it yourself or do you want to hire someone?
The main feature of free services is that while you can start a blog you must pay very close attention to the terms of service (TOS). You usually don’t need any technical knowhow to operate one of these free hosted blogs. But, they will usually put advertisements on your blog. Many free services do not allow you to run your blog for a profit, or a business. Also, since they are hosting you, they can delete your blog and information at any point. Some even claim the rights to use your pictures or other information as they see fit. So read the TOS very carefully if you choose to go for a free blogging service.

I believe that work at home moms appreciate electronics. Our children see that and also appreciate – or want – electronics. I’d like my children to realize that computers are more than just a fun place to play games. They are tools for learning, for working, for improving our life.
Toshiba recognizes that same fact and are hosting a Go Green Giveaway in celebration of Earth Day 2011. The contest ends May 1, 2011 so go now to enter.

Maria Bailey encourages you to not forget marketing to offline moms as well as online. Don’t limit yourself to other bloggers.

If you are not sure that blogging for money is possible then perhaps you should take a look at the evidence that yes, blogging for money is indeed possible. There are a lot of examples of bloggers who are making a full time living, or who started as a blogger and moved into a coveted position elsewhere, but the result is the same, blogging made them money and got them where they wanted to be.
If you come across a great post, article, video, etc. that encourages you – save it! You could bookmark the link – unless you change computers alot. Then try saving it as an email draft or blog post draft. Save it somewhere you can find it again. Perhaps there’s an actual book or magazine article that lifts your spirits. [Remember books and magazines? You have to hold them and turn the pages.]
In the blogging world you will have discouraging days, tiring days, I’m-too-worn-out-to-do-anything days and you will need some encouragement. That’s when you can turn to your inspirational file and get yourself back on track. Don’t give up!

Capture Ideas for Future Use
Yes, writing becomes easier with practice; but there will still be times when you sit in front of a blank monitor and wonder just what you’re going to talk about today. Fresh out of brilliant ideas? Open up your idea list and find your inspiration.
Your idea list might live in a text file on your laptop, in your email account, or even in a software application like Evernote. Use it as a place to store those snippets of conversation you overhear about your topic, questions people ask you about it, and those fantastic titles that always seem to occur just as you’re drifting off to sleep. You can even store links to other blogs or articles you want to expand upon, or that you think you can cover better. The point is to have something written down to help you get started writing even if your muse is on her coffee break.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a content production line running on your computer? Just like in a factory, your blog posts would travel along an assembly line where a machine would insert an attention-grabbing title, opening paragraph, a few sub-headings and bullet points, and finish it off with a compelling call to action. Simply push a button to create a quality article, upload to your blog, and you’re done in time to enjoy dinner with the kids.
Unfortunately, unless you’re running an auto-blog, content creation takes a bit more work than simply pushing a button. But you can learn how to blog better. You can become more prolific, more efficient, and even faster at building articles and blog posts. You might even make it in to dinner.
