Quick! Not counting a computer, name one piece of hardware that a blogger must own to make her blog a success.
Did you say digital camera? Great, so did I!
Why do I think a digital camera is essential blogger equipment? Because a picture is worth a thousand words and nowhere is that truer than on a blog!
Take a foodie blog for example. I can write out the recipe for Chocolate Demise; and it might sound good to you. I could even tell you that the recipe is included in a cookbook called Death by Chocolate: The Last Word on a Consuming Passion; and you might consider looking for it on Amazon.
But, what happens if I show you this picture?
Can you imagine yourself taking a bite of that cake? Do you want the recipe?
Did you just click the link for the cookbook?
Images carry the power to elicit action when words alone might not be enough. That’s why it’s important to always include a relevant picture with a blog post. And the easiest way to get a relevant picture is to use your digital camera.
I like to have two different cameras on hand: a point-and-shoot like the cute little pink SONY Cyber Shot DSC-S950 you see above and a digital SLR camera like the Canon Digital Rebel XSi you see below.
The SONY is great for keeping in a purse or diaper bag for spontaneous photo ops. The quality is decent and the price is easy on the budget.
I also like having a SLR for taking quality close-ups when photographing food and products. SLRs cost more but the quality is AMAZING! If your budget has some wiggle room definitely go for the SLR!
So, whether you are taking a picture of your latest baking masterpiece for a foodie blog or demonstrating before and after shots of a cleaning product for a review blog, a digital camera is an essential piece of equipment for a blogger!

Your welcome, Cee! I really do think a digital camera is vital for a blogger. ESPECIALLY a foodie blogger. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a picture of a particular recipe on Flicker (like I did with the cake) but most of the time you’ll need to take a picture of your own masterpiece.
The camera is a good deal. It would definitely be adequate for blog pics. My digital camera was a gift in 2005. I need an upgrade but I’m hoping Santa is going to bring me digital SLR this year.
But I would love to have the sweet little pink Sony you see in the post to use in the meantime. 
The cake looks so yummy.
Yeah! A digital camera, headphone and mic are some other essentials besides my PC which I use for blogging.
I recently got a Olympus for my kids so they can take their own pics to add to their own blog. The boys really love using it.

Dominique, I’m curious about the camera you bought for your kids. Can you share more about it and how old your kids are? My 5 yr old son is VERY interested in my camera so I’m planning to give him one for his birthday next month. I want one that won’t cost me a fortune in batteries and won’t break when he drops it.
My guy doesn’t have a blog yet (he’s just now learning to read). But it won’t be long! He’s constantly telling me I need to put different stories and pictures on me blog. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
You’re right! Over the past year, I have been taking pictures of almost everything. My husband is always asking, “Why are you taking a picture of that?” lol For my blogs, of course! A picture draws the reader’s attention and helps them relate to the topic.
