Finding Focus

When I started my personal Blog back in 2006, I had vague ideas about what I might want to blog about, but no concrete plan for reigning those ideas in and presenting them in a way that might set my Blog apart or make it a place that readers would want to visit.

Consequently, my Blog never found its audience, and while it has been and continues to be a place I enjoy posting to intermittently when random inspiration strikes, it has never really had the potential for being anything but a hobby.

Some of the ideas I originally had when I started that Blog, however, did have potential. I wanted to talk about and review books and movies. I wanted to help other women find ways to work from home. And, yes, I wanted to see if maybe there might be a way to make some of those things profitable.

Fortunately, I gave the Blog a name that kind of let me get away with that lack of focus. My Miscellanea is just what it says it is – a selection of varied and often unrelated things brought together in one collection. It may never become much more than a public journal, but it will always hold a special place in my heart for being my first foray into the Blogosphere.

Early in that blogging adventure I actually told potential readers that I intended to eventually break recurring subject themes off into other Blogs someday. Time marched on and still I hadn’t yet seized upon an opportunity to make good on that promise. Then I found Twitter and met Kelly McCausey, proprietor of this site, and everything changed.

One telephone conversation with Kelly reminded me that all I really needed to do was spend a little time thinking about what it was I wanted to be doing online.

One afternoon I turned off the computer and spent some time with a notebook and pencil brainstorming it old school until I discovered that my passion for scented candles, which just a few months before had led me to start a new home-based business, was a topic that might make for an interesting and potentially profitable new Blog.

That’s how The Candle Corner was born.

While I am not new to blogging I am new to marketing and monetizing Blogs. My contributions to this site will chronicle the kinds of things I try as I build a new Blog from the ground up. I hope you’ll follow along with me and see how it goes.

If you haven’t yet started your own Blog, I suggest that you spend some time writing down any and all ideas you may have that could become topics for a new Blog. Look at your notes and see if related themes keep coming up. If they do, that may indicate a potential subject for you to begin blogging about. Do it today.

If you start your Blog right now you can do more than just follow my journey, you can hop on the ride yourself and build your own profitable mommy Blog with us.

Welcome to PMB Cris! Great post! I too, have just recently found what I LOVE to do, with some help from OUR (like how I call her OUR) Kelly McCausey. She opened up the door for my first writing project, and I’ve discovered I LOVE to write! I don’t want to write a novel, yet anyway, but I love to write blog posts and articles. I am still trying to figure out how all this is going to pan out for me, but I really think it’s my passion! I look forward to reading more from you! Congrats!
