They aren’t universal rules. They are my rules. You can throw them out the proverbial window if you want, but if you follow them they will help you. I have been a guest poster in between 15-20 times. I’ve been told that I’m a great guest poster. I have accepted guest posts between 10-15 times; there is definitely different levels of guest posters.
“A one way link from an established, relevant website is valuable and guest blogging continues to be a great way to build a fresh, relevant link to your site.” ~Kelly McCausey
1. Know the blog you ask to guest post on. Be a regular reader, selfless sharer, and valuable commenter before asking for the main space.
2. Tailor the post to the potential blog. Match the skill level of the readers. Talk about the author and how you know them if applicable. Their readers are already interested in them so cash in on that interest.
3. Create original content! If they wanted PLR they could go and buy it without you. They are gracious enough to give you space on their site; give them good content.
4. Be professional and friendly. If you have connected on Twitter that’s fine, but take it to a professional email. Respond to their emails promptly.
5. Don’t make them have to come back to you for more info. Send the content, the bio, a picture of you, and a picture for the post. Make it easy for them – especially if they are a busy blogger or WAHM.
6. Link to what you want to promote. It’s not rude to link to a specific post in the main content and link to your main page/product in the bio section. If you make an easy place for them to link to one of their posts it’s even nicer.
