calendarIf I’ve heard it once I’ve heard it a hundred times – Content is Key.  Your blog can look fab-u-lous, but if you don’t keep adding new posts nobody will see how good it looks.  All dressed up and no one to comment.

Does this mean you have to post every day?

No.  It depends on what you want out of your blog.  If your goal is to gain a large readership and make money from your blog it’s good to post every day.  If you’re doing it for community a couple times of week will suffice.  If you’re just posting things for your relatives once a month works.

I think it’s most important that you post consistently to build a loyal readership.  If you

only want to post once a week schedule it for the same day each week.  Not everyone uses a feed reader, and clicking to a site without new content gets old fast.

When you first start blogging you usually have lots of ideas, passion, and the urge to blog all day long.  I suggest that you limit yourself to one post a day when you start [unless you're a frugal/deal type of blog] and save the others in your drafts.  That way you will have some posts ready when life gets busy.

That early passion will eventually level out and might even turn to resentment.  [gasp] Yes, it happens.  There will be days when you just don’t want to blog.  So determine what you are going to do now.  Will you keep plugging away consistently, will you take a blogging break, or will you just quit?

One thing that has really helped me is to take one day off a week.  I’ve posted a Sunday Poem since I started.  I prepare them earlier in the week and post date them for Sunday.  [WP post date is done by clicking the "Edit" beside "Publish Immediately"]  A lot of bloggers do a link love day.  Some do a recipe once a week.  Maybe you will just want to take one day off.  If you do it consistently your readers will know what to expect, but your stats will suffer.

Have you decided what kind of blogger you will be?  If you are reading this you probably want to be a serious blogger that makes money.  So determine that you will post daily, and decide what you are going to do when Burn-Out comes knocking on your door.

  1. I was actually reaching the burn out point and i was starting to resent it a bit. But I knew that there was a reason I love it. So I spent some time and reached out to my communities…. I asked those who wanted to participate to provide guest posts on my site. For a week I had guest posters. Which kept my traffic up, if not increased it. It was a great way to build my site, but to take a break myself! I scheduled all the guests a week in advance and was able to focus on the part of the site I love. The marketing of it.

Yeah, I’m quickly learning that you have to have a plan or strategy with blogging. You can’t post long posts every day, so I see why people do days like “Wordless Wednesday” or “Thoughtful Thursday”.
