Why Blogging May Be a Mistake

Blogging mistakes

The last year has been a time of me purposely stepping out to find out what online business is right for me.  I know for sure that I want a business I can manage from anywhere there’s a laptop and internet connection.  But there are so many ways to go about it. Getting clear on what’s not suited for me has really helped me move forward.

I’m learning that sometimes it’s not so much about what I want, as it is about what I don’t want.

I know I enjoy writing, teaching, researching and developing marketing strategies.  This is why blogging appeals to me, because it’s an outlet to express all these interests in one spot. However, through my blog internship, I’ve come to realize that blogging on a daily basis is not my cup of tea. So a business model where the blog is the focus would not work for me.  As they say, experience is the best teacher.

The pressure of having people on edge waiting for my next post would smother me. Blogs like Problogger and Copyblogger come to mind when I think about this style of blogging.  My blog will be my central marketing hub for my products and services-a cozy place to invite people to connect with and learn more about me a few times a week.  Not necessarily the hot spot for ongoing conversation and debate seven days a week.

Also, I realize there’s not too much that I’m saying that’s entirely unique. If you think about it, many of us are  teaching the same things just with a twist here and there.   Now I know it’s me that will make my business stand out.

My personality, style and experience will attract my audience.

I’m a married mom with two young children, as well as older children, working full-time trying to transition to a full-time internet business.  Right now that’s my niche.  Other moms like me because I can relate to them beyond blogging.

No need for me to be revolutionary, just relevant. Or maybe that is revolutionary.

As it stands right now, I’m leaning toward creating information products and possibly a membership site.  Eventually, I would like to move into coaching directly. Time and scheduling are big issues for me.  More than likely, my first products will focus on strategies to streamline blogging and content marketing for busy moms. Stay tuned as I move through this process.  Who knows what else my blog internship will reveal!

I love your idea for time management and blog strategies as a busy parent. Will definitely be looking out for them!
I've come to realise that although I love being a part of various social networking sites, I can't do them all. British Mummy Bloggers is a great place for eg, and somewhere I feel like I should spend more time putting myself out there, but right now I don't have time for that and twitter, facebook AND blogging, even though it would hugely benefit my blog with getting it out there, I just can't seem to find the drive to do it all the time.

  2. Excellent post Keshia!! It's funny how we are all getting different things out of this blog internship. It's good that you have found your niche and now know how you want to go about building your business.
I have also learned that blogging everyday isn't for me either but I could definitely do every other day. The planning and researching is something I thought I would hate but love it. I'm amazed at the things I find when I am focused on completely each weekly assignment.

    Hey Natalie,

I'm learning so much with the internship. I didn't think I would like the social marketing part but I'm enjoying making connections. As far as finding my niche, I just decided I would start where I'm at-with my own personal experiences.

    Hey Marilyn,

We relate on some many levels! :-) I'm glad you find the time management strategies useful. It's really encouraging and confirms my direction.

Like you, the social aspect has been a real stretch for me. But it has paid off! I'm learning that I don't have to be everywhere, but to focus on adding value.
